Income generating activities for deprived communities in India is a major concern for BIRDS volunteers.
Women in rural areas of India suffer both economically and socially. As a result of their general status as second class citizens, development programmes do not take into account the aspirations of women, and are not effective in achieving their objectives.
Rural women in our project area suffer from being invisible, both economically and socially. Economic invisibility stems from the perception that women are not relevant to waged or self employment. However, they have in fact been playing a very important and significant role. We have been engaged in a variety of occupations such as small farm agriculture, live stock vending, tree growing, small trading and vending, candle making ,tailoring, handicraft designing,. As a nonprofit organization we want empower these women and strengthen their economic security.
